After Kasie and Abby’s disastrous tee shots, several more golfers lined up and hit before heading off as foursomes and threesomes.
The Lynx member president, Buddy Hobeson, ushered Kasie to a golf cart with a man behind the wheel who looked … stunning and in the snap of a finger made her feel relaxed and welcomed.
“Kasie, please meet Daniel Crumells,” said Hobeson, “One of our newest members and all-around ambassador not just for the sport but for Maple Grove.”
Kasie waved. “Hi.”
“Pleased to meet you. Set your clubs in the back and hop in.”
Kasie fastened her golf bag and enjoyed his eyes tracing her shape in the tight knit top and short skirt.
“Is that a dress for success look?”
“Looking fashionable doesn’t mean you can hit a golf ball, does it?”
He touched the pedal, drove past the tee box and stopped. “Grab your ball. We’ll take it up close to mine.”
“Shouldn’t I hit it here?”
“You could but they’re giving prizes for longest drive, longest putt, and I even think worst shots.”
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, it’s a silly inside joke. Usually the country club’s president gets the award. And you don’t want to it here because do you see how many golfers are behind us?”
Kasie was too embarrassed to turn around. Hopping out, she scooped her ball out of the neatly trimmed grass and hopped back in. “I shouldn’t be here.”
“Why not?” Daniel drove past more golfers who were wandering through trees.
“Because I’m lousy that’s why.”
“We all start somewhere.” He slowed and motioned ahead. “There’s my ball.”
Kasie turned around and could barely see the tee. “Wow, that was some shot.”
“Thanks. It’s to be expected. I started golfing when I was little. My grandfather taught me.” He pointed. “Drop your ball right here.”
Kasie got out, plopped it on the ground. “What club should I use?”
Daniel scrunched his face and it was clear he was suppressing a laugh. “Try the seven iron. It’s easy to handle, like a guy who wants to impress you.”
“That’s clever. Do you want to impress me?” Kasie smirked. This guy was a lot of more fun than being with Marla.
“Of course not. That’s the worst thing to do. The best way to impress people is by not giving a damn.”
Kasie set her club behind the ball. “I thought the saying was not giving a fuck.”
“I do give a fuck. Fucking to me is important. It’s an art form.”
“Art form?”
“Yeah.”
His calm voice and imagery swept through Kasie that made her tremble in a good way.
