“You, okay?” Jamison spoke quietly and brushed her brunette hair over her shoulder.
“Mmm, yeah.”
The reply wasn’t convincing.
“Babe, come on.” Jamison touched Bentley’s red hair, glowing from the late afternoon sun streaming through the window. “I had told you.”
“I know.”
“It’s a need of mine.”
“Yeah.” Bentley bit her lip and sniffled.
“Sweetheart.” Jamison kissed her darling lover on the cheek, but Bentley turned her face toward the window and sniffled again. “Look at me.” No response. “Come on, look at me.”
Bentley turned, half closing her eyes.
“Is that a tear?” Jamison pursed her lips and kissed Bentley’s cheek that was now moist.
“Yeah.”
Jamison knew she had to be careful with her words and encouragement. “You know, though, don’t you?” Silence. “Hmm?”
Another tear moved slowly down Bentley’s cheek.
Jamison giggled and touched Bentley’s tummy. “Tell, Mommy. Be honest.”
Finally, a giggle. Bentley smiled and sniffled.
Jamison found the opening and tickled Bentley’s side. “You like it don’t you?”
“Yeah.” Bentley squirmed.
“Tell me. Tell your Mommy.”
The title that Jamison took in their relationship signified the role that each woman had transformed into. “Tell me, darling.” She poked Bentley in the ribs again, eliciting laughter.
