Watumah University: higher education in Maple Grove
Kasie took a breath while lugging her suitcase into the dormitory. Freshmen could either live at home or in the dorm.
Since home was more than 200 miles away, Watumah University didn’t give her options for her accommodation. Age eighteen was supposed to be a step into adulthood and freedom, but maybe freedom wasn’t as free as it seemed.
Excited chatter echoed off the walls and in the elevator, and after a day of parking the car, sweating while unloading, and saying farewell to the parents Kasie looked out the window, across the commons, to the gleaming metal and glass of the library, and the brick buildings of her classes.
Her roommate, Abby, wore nothing but underwear and a T-shirt over her breasts and had skirts, jeans, T-shirts, and panties laid out on her bed. She started putting them away in her bureau drawers and hanging up her other clothes.
Kasie brushed her hair over her shoulder and glanced at her phone. Silent.
Michael was supposed to text her and share photos from his orientation across the state. Or was this it and she’d never hear from him again?
The world suddenly felt desolate despite the laughter and raucous noise in the hallway, like she was living in isolation.
“Kasie. Hello. I said, ‘Want to get fries?’” Abby had taken off her shirt and put on a bra before choosing another top and sliding into tan hiking shorts that enhanced the roundness of her ass.
Her breasts seemed just the right size for her body and her gaze seemed warm and friendly.
“Oh, I didn’t hear you.” Kasie felt self-conscious. Was she attractive? How did she compare to the other girls?
“I can tell. Thinking about the boys?” Abby had an upbeat lilt in her voice that matched her
“Not really.”
“Come on.” Abby playfully took Kasie’s hand and led her out of the room.
“Where are we going?”
“Get a bite to eat and see Maple Grove.” Abby dodged a student ushering her parents to the elevator. “The stairs are faster.” She dodged the elevators, headed to the stairwell, and hurried down the four flights.
She was a bundle of energy and seemed to sweep Kasie off campus, through a busy intersection filled with cars leaving campus, and to the restaurants and coffee shops.
